Lesson Breakdown

Build Your Persona
We want your personality to shine through no matter what language you're speaking. So it only makes sense that the Persona - your unique communication fingerprint - forms the heart of your Sygmatic profile. Your Persona tracks key personality traits in your communication to show how similarly you might speak to the people in a video lesson.

Choose a Video Lesson
Instead of using static textbook material or making up sentences, Sygmatic is centered around learning a language through videos that native speakers have made for themselves - that means totally natural and unfiltered! Choose from a wide range of practical topics (see below) to gain confidence interacting on any subject, from mundane to exciting!

Build Listening Skills
You won't have the luxury of reading subtitles during a real conversation, so using context clues like body language & facial expressions is essential to bolster your listening! We'll test your understanding by having you fill in blanks in the transcription. The goal is to retrain your brain to associate how people actually speak with the written form.

Save New Words & Phrases
Click on any word and save it to your word bank . Sometimes, familiar words can change meaning based on what's happening in a conversation. When you look up the meaning later, you'll be sure to find the right meaning for everyday expressions, slang, filler words, interjections, & more because the full context is saved in your word bank.

Uncover the Context
The same conversation can look very different whether it's personal, professional, or even transactional (like buying something at the store). Understanding how the Setting (i.e. a park or office), Speaker's identity, and Audience (who you're talking to) interact help you anticipate how someone will speak for travel, daily life, and work!

Visualize Pronunciation
Why is "I don't know" pronounced "ahdunno?" Fast, fluid speaking is notoriously difficult to grasp - people slur & murmur in everyday interactions! No one speaks with the precision taught in class, so we match sound waves to a phonetic transcription for you to master pitch, volume, and rhythm while seeing which sounds disappear with faster speaking.

Record Yourself Speaking
You need a balanced recipe of pronunciation, pitch, volume, and rhythm to convey your thoughts so native speakers understand your intended meaning. We're not asking you to blindly imitate someone, but by practicing matching a native speaker of a similar age & background you will build muscle memory & be prepared to converse with ease!

Track Your Progress
Throughout the lesson, you'll complete exercises to test your skills and gauge progress. Sygmatic isn't a 'get-rich-quick' style of language learning, but over time you'll see the fruits of your labor! We track your speaking accuracy (pitch, volume, rhythm), how many new words you've learned, and which topics you've studied among other metrics.
