Lesson Breakdown

Sygmatic Persona - Personality-focused language learning for intermediate and advanced students specialized in natural communication & cultural fluency

Build Your Persona

We want your personality to shine through no matter what language you're speaking. So it only makes sense that the Persona - your unique communication fingerprint - forms the heart of your Sygmatic profile. Your Persona tracks key personality traits in your communication to show how similarly you might speak to the people in a video lesson.

Sygmatic Feature - Play Video Lesson - Personality-focused language learning for intermediate and advanced students specialized in natural communication & cultural fluency

Choose a Video Lesson

Instead of using static textbook material or making up sentences, Sygmatic is centered around learning a language through videos that native speakers have made for themselves - that means totally natural and unfiltered! Choose from a wide range of practical topics (see below) to gain confidence interacting on any subject, from mundane to exciting!

Sygmatic Feature - Listening - Personality-focused language learning for intermediate and advanced students specialized in natural communication & cultural fluency

Build Listening Skills

You won't have the luxury of reading subtitles during a real conversation, so using context clues like body language & facial expressions is essential to bolster your listening! We'll test your understanding by having you fill in blanks in the transcription. The goal is to retrain your brain to associate how people actually speak with the written form.

Sygmatic Feature - Vocab Word Bank - Personality-focused language learning for intermediate and advanced students specialized in natural communication & cultural fluency

Save New Words & Phrases

Click on any word and save it to your word bank . Sometimes, familiar words can change meaning based on what's happening in a conversation. When you look up the meaning later, you'll be sure to find the right meaning for everyday expressions, slang, filler words, interjections, & more because the full context is saved in your word bank.

Sygmatic Context Situation - Personality-focused language learning for intermediate and advanced students specialized in natural communication & cultural fluency

Uncover the Context

The same conversation can look very different whether it's personal, professional, or even transactional (like buying something at the store). Understanding how the Setting (i.e. a park or office), Speaker's identity, and Audience (who you're talking to) interact help you anticipate how someone will speak for travel, daily life, and work!

Sygmatic Feature - Spoken Sound - Personality-focused language learning for intermediate and advanced students specialized in natural communication & cultural fluency

Visualize Pronunciation

Why is "I don't know" pronounced "ahdunno?" Fast, fluid speaking is notoriously difficult to grasp - people slur & murmur in everyday interactions! No one speaks with the precision taught in class, so we match sound waves to a phonetic transcription for you to master pitch, volume, and rhythm while seeing which sounds disappear with faster speaking.

Sygmatic Feature - Record Yourself - Personality-focused language learning for intermediate and advanced students specialized in natural communication & cultural fluency

Record Yourself Speaking

You need a balanced recipe of pronunciation, pitch, volume, and rhythm to convey your thoughts so native speakers understand your intended meaning. We're not asking you to blindly imitate someone, but by practicing matching a native speaker of a similar age & background you will build muscle memory & be prepared to converse with ease!

Sygmatic Progress Tracking - Personality-focused language learning for intermediate and advanced students specialized in natural communication & cultural fluency

Track Your Progress

Throughout the lesson, you'll complete exercises to test your skills and gauge progress. Sygmatic isn't a 'get-rich-quick' style of language learning, but over time you'll see the fruits of your labor! We track your speaking accuracy (pitch, volume, rhythm), how many new words you've learned, and which topics you've studied among other metrics.

Effective communicating requires being able to adapt to all sorts of scenarios. That's why Sygmatic's video content focuses on real people doing everyday things. Our lesson topics cover personal, professional, and transactional interactions; whether it's a mundane trip to the grocery store, a nerve-racking business presentation, or a first date - we've got you covered!

It's not enough to just study grammar and vocabulary. When we tell someone a story or ask for directions, we’re not just using simple words; body language, inflection, timing, gestures, and cultural references are seamlessly intertwined to send a cohesive message. To help you move beyond one-dimensional communication and connect with others in dynamic ways, Sygmatic focuses on:

  • Grammar
  • Word Choice
  • Body Language
  • Facial Expressions
  • Exclamations
  • Filler Words
  • Interjections
  • Intonation
  • Volume
  • Pacing
  • Pausing
  • Dialects
  • Context
  • Culture

It may seem like a lot to master - like a juggling act - but the reality is that you already use and understand all of these skills in your native language! By learning how nonverbal communication layers atop grammar, verbs, and vocabulary, you'll be able to understand native speakers with ease, speak more fluidly, and adapt your style to any situation.

We hope to offer a wide range of languages from across the rich diversity of language families around the world. In the short term, we're playing to our strengths and building Sygmatic for the languages our team knows best. Because Sygmatic is flipping regular language learning on its head, we will be diligent as we add new languages to make certain you have as comprehensive an experience as possible!

There is no one 'correct' form of a language; most apps and classes teach the standard form of a language, which is what people in power have determined to be 'best'. Often, deviations from the standard are seen as incorrect or inappropriate. In reality, all forms of a language - 'standard' or not - follow logical rules and are valid forms of expression. As language learners, we have to prioritize learning and using language as it's actually spoken, rather than following every rule perfectly.
